What is a lock cylinder?
The lock cylinder is the part into which you insert the key. When the correct key turns, the cylinder operates the locking mechanism inside the door.
The cylinder and the complete lock mechanism are two different components. The cylinder recognises and accepts the key, while the lock mechanism moves the latch, bolt or additional locking points.
When the mechanism still works smoothly, replacing only the cylinder is usually faster and more economical than changing the complete lock. The correct replacement must nevertheless match the door, the existing fittings, the required security level and the way the property is used.
When should the cylinder be replaced?
Cylinder replacement is commonly recommended after losing a key, moving into a new property or changing tenants. It may also be sensible when a former employee, contractor, cleaner or short-term guest could still have access.
A replacement can also be useful when the cylinder has become unreliable, the key is difficult to insert or you want better control over future key copies.
Unlike a complete lock replacement, cylinder replacement changes the keys without automatically changing the entire mechanism. Once the new cylinder is installed, the previous keys no longer operate the door.
Lost or stolen keys
Opening a locked door restores access, but it does not remove the security risk created by a missing key.
Even when the key was probably lost in an innocent situation, you may not know who will find it or whether it can be connected to the property. For that reason, replacing the cylinder is usually recommended after a lost or stolen entrance key.
When the door is locked and no key is available, we can first open the door and then install a new cylinder during the same visit, provided that a suitable replacement is available.
Before opening an entrance door, we require reasonable proof that the customer is authorised to access the property.
After moving into a new apartment
Replacing the entrance-door cylinder is one of the simplest security steps after buying or renting a new property.
The previous keys may have been handled by former owners, tenants, relatives, agents, contractors or property managers. This does not mean that anyone intends to misuse them. It simply means that the new occupant cannot know with certainty how many copies exist.
Installing a new cylinder places control of access back in the hands of the current resident.
Standard and higher-security cylinders
A standard cylinder may provide a practical solution for a temporary repair, an older door that will soon be replaced or an entrance with additional independent protection.
For a frequently used main entrance, we generally recommend a reliable product appropriate for the value and construction of the door. Higher-security cylinders may contain reinforced components, drilling resistance, more complex pin arrangements or controlled key profiles.
The most expensive model is not automatically the best choice. A premium cylinder cannot compensate for a weak door, worn mechanism or unsuitable protective fitting.

Emergency-function cylinders
With some traditional cylinders, a key left inside prevents another key from operating the lock from outside.
An emergency-function cylinder remains operable with the correct outside key even when another key is inserted on the inside.
This can be especially useful for fixed-knob doors and homes where an elderly or vulnerable person lives. A relative or carer with the correct spare key may still be able to enter when assistance is needed.
Emergency function does not allow an incorrect key to open the door. It only allows the correct key to work from both sides under these circumstances.
Restricted key copying
A restricted-key cylinder is normally supplied with a security card. Official additional keys can generally be ordered only after the correct card has been presented to an authorised service.
This can improve key control in Airbnb apartments, rental properties, offices, shops and renovated homes where several temporary users may have handled the keys.
Restricted duplication cannot guarantee that misuse is impossible, but it significantly reduces the likelihood of unnoticed official copying.
One key for several locks
A keyed-alike system allows the same key to operate several separate cylinders.
For example, one key may operate two locks on the same entrance, an apartment door and security grille, or several office doors.
This makes daily use more convenient without necessarily reducing the security level. The cylinders must be compatible and prepared as part of the same system, so some keyed-alike arrangements may need to be ordered in advance.
How many keys are supplied?
Many common cylinders are supplied with three or five keys. The exact number depends on the selected model.
Before choosing a product, it is worth considering how many family members, tenants, employees, cleaners or property managers require their own key.
Additional keys can usually be ordered. With restricted-key systems, the security card will generally be required.
Correct measurement is essential
A lock cylinder must fit the door accurately.
It is measured separately from the centre of the fixing screw toward the exterior and interior sides. A cylinder may therefore have unequal dimensions, such as 35 x 40 mm or 45 x 50 mm.
The correct size depends on the thickness of the door, the position of the lock mechanism and the handles or protective fittings installed on each side.
A cylinder that projects too far from the external fitting may be unnecessarily exposed. A cylinder that is too short may be difficult to operate or may not fit correctly.
Photographs can help us prepare before travelling, but we confirm the final measurements at the property.
Is cylinder replacement enough?
Cylinder replacement is generally sufficient when the existing lock mechanism works smoothly, the handle operates normally and the purpose of the work is to invalidate previous keys or introduce a new key-control feature.
A new cylinder will not solve problems caused by a damaged mechanism or badly aligned door.
Further repair may be necessary when the key turns but the bolt does not move, the handle hangs, the mechanism makes unusual sounds or the door places heavy pressure on the locking points.
For this reason, we inspect the complete operation of the door before deciding that only the cylinder should be changed.
Different entrance doors require different solutions
We work with most residential and commercial entrance doors commonly found in Budapest.
Traditional wooden doors may require unusual dimensions or adjustment because of age and movement. Plastic doors often use multipoint locking mechanisms, where pressure or alignment problems can be mistaken for cylinder failure.
Hi-Sec, Uni-Sec, TerraSec and similar Chinese-made security doors may have narrow protective fittings or particular cylinder dimensions. Hungarian and international security-door systems, including Nívó, Dierre, Mottura and Mul-T-Lock, may also require specific compatible components.

Airbnb and rental properties
Short-term rental properties have particular key-management challenges. Guests, cleaners, co-hosts, maintenance workers and property managers may all use the same entrance keys.
Cylinder replacement may be advisable when a guest loses a key, a key is not returned or management of the property changes.
For an Airbnb guest requesting urgent replacement, we verify the active booking and, whenever possible, contact the host or property manager before making a permanent change.
Restricted-key systems can also provide better long-term control for rental apartments.
Warning signs of a failing cylinder
A cylinder often becomes less reliable before it fails completely.
The key may become difficult to insert, require movement before turning or become hard to remove. The cylinder may work only from one side or behave differently with different copies of the same key.
Do not repeatedly force a stiff key. It may bend or break, and further damage may occur inside the cylinder or lock mechanism.
Planned replacement is usually simpler and less expensive than opening the door after the cylinder has failed while locked.

4. Installation and testing
After installation, we test the cylinder from both sides with the door open and closed. We also check that all supplied keys operate correctly and that the lock mechanism is not under unnecessary pressure.
Pricing
The price depends mainly on the cylinder dimensions, security category, supplied keys and any special functions.
Emergency-function, restricted-key and keyed-alike systems may cost more than a basic standard cylinder. Additional work may also be necessary when the door requires adjustment or the existing lock has already failed.
