What is a multipoint locking system?
A multipoint lock secures the door at several positions rather than only at the main lock case.
Depending on the design, it may operate additional rollers, bolts, hooks or locking points along the edge of the door. These are usually controlled by the handle, the key or a combination of both.
Multipoint systems are commonly found in plastic entrance doors, modern wooden doors, Chinese-made security doors, and Hungarian and international security-door systems.
Although two doors may look similar from the outside, their internal locking mechanisms may be completely different. This is why the exact system must be identified before ordering or installing a replacement.
Common signs of a multipoint-lock problem
The mechanism often gives warning signs before it fails completely.
You may notice that the handle has become more difficult to lift, the key feels tight or the door no longer locks smoothly at every point. The mechanism may make unusual sounds, or the door may need to be pushed or pulled before the key will turn.
In some cases, the main lock case fails. In others, a connecting rod, gearbox, hook or roller stops moving correctly.
A fault should be checked early. If the door becomes completely jammed in the locked position, it must first be opened before the repair can begin, making the job more complex and time-consuming.
The lock may not be the original cause
One of the most common causes of multipoint-lock failure is poor door alignment.
When the door drops or moves out of position, the locking points no longer enter the receiving parts in the frame freely. The user then has to apply more force to the handle and key.
This additional pressure affects the main lock case, cylinder, handle, rods and locking points.
A correctly adjusted mechanism should operate smoothly without excessive force. If the door remains misaligned, installing a new lock alone may lead to the same problem again.
For this reason, we always inspect the hinges, door position, frame and receiving points before deciding what needs replacement.
Repair, partial replacement or complete replacement?
A multipoint-lock problem does not automatically mean that the entire mechanism must be replaced.
Adjustment may be sufficient when the locking system is still mechanically sound and the main problem is door or frame alignment.
Some systems contain separate modules, allowing a damaged main lock case, upper unit or lower unit to be replaced independently.
Complete mechanism replacement may be necessary when the internal system is badly worn, broken or no longer safe to use.
When the original mechanism is obsolete or unavailable, it may sometimes be possible to adapt the door to a more widely available modern system.
The correct option depends on the construction of the door, the condition of the frame and whether compatible replacement components can be sourced.
Chinese-made security doors
Hi-Sec, Uni-Sec, TerraSec and similar Chinese-made security doors often use multipoint systems with separate lock modules.
Depending on the model, the main lock, upper lock or lower lock may be replaceable independently. This can make repair more economical than replacing the complete mechanism.
However, several visually similar versions exist, and their internal dimensions may differ. Photographs and telephone identification help us prepare, but the final decision is made after inspecting the actual door.
Plastic and wooden entrance doors
Plastic and modern wooden doors often use handle-operated multipoint mechanisms. The handle is lifted to engage the rollers, bolts or hooks, after which the key secures the system.
Many manufacturers and configurations exist. Even within the same brand, dimensions can vary significantly. Important measurements may include the backset, faceplate width, handle-to-cylinder distance, and the type and position of locking points.
A difference of only a few millimetres may make a replacement part unusable. This is why we do not recommend buying a mechanism based only on its appearance or a general online description.
Why accurate measurement is essential
Multipoint mechanisms are not fully standardised.
Two lock strips may look almost identical but differ in the position of the gearbox, cylinder, handle spindle or locking points.
A wrongly ordered mechanism may not fit the door at all, even when the difference appears small.
Before selecting a replacement, we measure the complete system and compare the important dimensions and locking positions.
Older doors and unavailable parts
A common problem with doors that are 15-20 years old is that the original mechanism is no longer manufactured or distributed locally.
Rare hook systems, older roller configurations and unusual dimensions may be difficult to source. In some cases, the part is available only after a longer delivery period.
Where the original component cannot be obtained, we consider whether the door can be adapted to a more commonly available system.
This may require modification of the frame receivers and careful adjustment of the new locking points. It is not suitable for every door, but when technically possible, it can extend the life of an otherwise serviceable entrance for many years.
A failed multipoint lock does not always mean a new door
Many customers assume that a broken multipoint mechanism means the complete entrance door must be replaced. In most cases, this is not true.
If the door leaf and frame remain in good condition, replacing or rebuilding the locking system may be considerably more economical than buying a new security or entrance door.
A complete door replacement may only be justified when the door itself is badly damaged, warped, structurally weak or no longer suitable for safe use.
Our aim is to preserve the existing door whenever this offers a reliable and sensible result.
Do not force the handle or key
If the handle becomes unusually heavy or the key requires increasing force, stop before the mechanism fails completely.
Forcing the system can damage the handle spindle, cylinder, main gearbox, internal rods, hooks or rollers.
DIY attempts with screwdrivers, levers or drilling tools can also damage the door leaf, frame and fittings while leaving the door locked.
A smaller adjustment or early repair is usually easier than opening and rebuilding a system after it has jammed completely.
What happens during the inspection?
We begin with a telephone assessment. We ask about the door type, the behaviour of the handle and key, and whether the door can still be opened and locked.
Photographs of the door edge, handle and visible lock strip can help us identify the likely mechanism before departure.
At the property, we inspect the position of the door, hinges, cylinder and handle, main lock case, complete lock strip, locking points, and the receiving parts in the frame.
We then determine whether the best solution is adjustment, repair, partial replacement, full mechanism replacement or conversion.
After the work, we test all locking points several times with the door open and closed. The goal is smooth operation without unnecessary load on the new parts.
Temporary solutions and special-order parts
Some specialised mechanisms cannot be replaced immediately because the exact part must be ordered.
Where technically possible, we may provide a temporary solution so that the entrance can remain securely closed until the correct part is available.
Whether this is possible depends on the fault and the door design. We explain the available options after inspection.
For rare components, clear photographs and accurate information before departure can reduce delays and help us begin sourcing the correct part sooner.
Repairing a locked or jammed door
If the multipoint mechanism fails while the door is locked, the door must first be opened carefully.
This can be more demanding than a standard lockout because one or more locking points may remain engaged even when the main part of the lock appears to move.
Our priority is to protect the door leaf and frame. Once the door is open, we inspect the system and identify which component failed.
Where a suitable replacement is available, the repair may be completed during the same visit. Specialised systems may require a later appointment.
Pricing
The cost depends on the type of door, the design of the locking system and the extent of the fault.
A simple adjustment or partial module replacement may cost significantly less than replacing a complete multipoint mechanism. Additional work may be required when the door is jammed closed, the frame needs modification or an obsolete system must be converted.
